Chethams School of Music, Manchester

Dating from the early C15th, Chethams originally served Manchester Cathedral as a college and home of priests and choristers and is the most complete example of its date in the country. It is of national importance both architecturally and historically. The building is listed at Grade I and is now the largest specialist music school in the UK.

We have provided specialist consultancy services on two phases of sensitive conservation work to date, including repairs to the medieval timber frame, consolidation of structural movement and masonry repair and repointing using lime mortar. Replacement and repair materials were carefully selected to be as close a match as possible to the originals and the insertion of stainless steel supports and ties carefully concealed within the original structure.

Both phases were grant-aided by English Heritage
